<br />
This was the invitation I designed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-olFroLh1IvY/Ud_uYtJMMiI/AAAAAAAAI10/08JUx8D8m0c/s1600/wineshowerinvitation.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-olFroLh1IvY/Ud_uYtJMMiI/AAAAAAAAI10/08JUx8D8m0c/s640/wineshowerinvitation.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We hung this gorgeous wreath that my mom made on the door. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m-Vhn7qINBA/Ud_xRff2wBI/AAAAAAAAI2M/5WB1Gpe1yJo/s1600/winebridalshower_01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m-Vhn7qINBA/Ud_xRff2wBI/AAAAAAAAI2M/5WB1Gpe1yJo/s640/winebridalshower_01.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
I added the welcome banner to it!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M7isjjYszSw/Ud_xSNp3HfI/AAAAAAAAI2U/fLfSc8eU2LQ/s1600/winebridalshower_02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M7isjjYszSw/Ud_xSNp3HfI/AAAAAAAAI2U/fLfSc8eU2LQ/s640/winebridalshower_02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I made wine jellies for favors - pinot noir, rose, and chardonnay. I used a <a href="http://www.americastestkitchenfeed.com/do-it-yourself/2012/04/how-to-make-wine-jelly/">recipe from America's Test Kitchen</a>. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NgCRooxsNvI/Ud_xPfee-jI/AAAAAAAAI2E/hDRNgmabkEU/s1600/winebridalshower_03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NgCRooxsNvI/Ud_xPfee-jI/AAAAAAAAI2E/hDRNgmabkEU/s640/winebridalshower_03.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used a <a href="http://yellowsuitcasestudio.blogspot.com/2011/11/suitcase-stories-from-side-of-road.html">vintage suitcase</a> to display them by the door so guests could take one before they left.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UP-HjIEeZ30/Ud_xVzzy1cI/AAAAAAAAI2k/CTGo6QjmzUc/s1600/winebridalshower_04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UP-HjIEeZ30/Ud_xVzzy1cI/AAAAAAAAI2k/CTGo6QjmzUc/s640/winebridalshower_04.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
The little cork sign stands were made by cutting a cork in half, making a hole with a nail in the center, and then placing a looped piece of wire in the hole.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L2rkZDrtleg/Ud_xX_8V2GI/AAAAAAAAI2s/ULIZ0P7AUsQ/s1600/winebridalshower_05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L2rkZDrtleg/Ud_xX_8V2GI/AAAAAAAAI2s/ULIZ0P7AUsQ/s640/winebridalshower_05.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
I designed the spread the love tags and also included a list of ways to enjoy wine jelly.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6b0sDsmTst0/Ud_xUu8-BWI/AAAAAAAAI2c/fDbXo0FRHtg/s1600/winebridalshower_06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6b0sDsmTst0/Ud_xUu8-BWI/AAAAAAAAI2c/fDbXo0FRHtg/s640/winebridalshower_06.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
One of the activities we had was guess the number of corks!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PSAioyjqb0k/Ud_xkJb1Q4I/AAAAAAAAI3k/T24zvHa2iwQ/s1600/winebridalshower_13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PSAioyjqb0k/Ud_xkJb1Q4I/AAAAAAAAI3k/T24zvHa2iwQ/s640/winebridalshower_13.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course we had quite the spread of food! We had stuffed dates, cheese, crackers, nuts, veggies, chocolate covered strawberries, cucumber sandwiches, tomatoes and mozzarella, mini cupcakes, and truffles, ooh and more cheese!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XPoePArzkFY/Ud_xkR5ZfRI/AAAAAAAAI3w/sNRKEv1ruI4/s1600/winebridalshower_15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XPoePArzkFY/Ud_xkR5ZfRI/AAAAAAAAI3w/sNRKEv1ruI4/s640/winebridalshower_15.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
My mom made the tuxedo and wedding dress chocolate covered strawberries. I wish I would have grabbed a closer photo they were so cute and delicious!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Xmr82hxV3Ws/Ud_xbNz68NI/AAAAAAAAI3E/Uml_O4r4SwQ/s640/winebridalshower_08.jpg" width="426" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made champagne mini cupcakes by adding champagne to the cake mix in place of water. I also added reduced champagne to homemade buttercream frosting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rF6I1g4Egeg/Ud_xYbFGdII/AAAAAAAAI20/AEQMrX79UH4/s1600/winebridalshower_07.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rF6I1g4Egeg/Ud_xYbFGdII/AAAAAAAAI20/AEQMrX79UH4/s640/winebridalshower_07.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
We also had dark chocolate cabernet truffles. <a href="http://www.howsweeteats.com/2013/02/cabernet-chocolate-truffles/">Recipe here.</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oco9hEwIXgs/Ud_xaJtDiiI/AAAAAAAAI28/vu1iUhyYKNc/s1600/winebridalshower_09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oco9hEwIXgs/Ud_xaJtDiiI/AAAAAAAAI28/vu1iUhyYKNc/s640/winebridalshower_09.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
The stuffed dates were a big hit! They're one of my favorites. <a href="http://www.foodnetworkasia.com/recipes/cheese-stuffed-dates-with-prosciutto-458.html">Recipe here.</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--w9kKG1o61Q/Ud_xhWRoFqI/AAAAAAAAI3c/pQg8-iVYgh8/s1600/winebridalshower_14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--w9kKG1o61Q/Ud_xhWRoFqI/AAAAAAAAI3c/pQg8-iVYgh8/s640/winebridalshower_14.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My husband and I found some old windows up above our garage and I used a paint marker to draw on one to add some decoration to the food table. I printed off the design first and then taped it to one side of the glass so I could trace over it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VGi6ba_EID4/Ud_xnMJiq3I/AAAAAAAAI4E/bbOgL8rsndc/s1600/winebridalshower_17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VGi6ba_EID4/Ud_xnMJiq3I/AAAAAAAAI4E/bbOgL8rsndc/s640/winebridalshower_17.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course we had some wine! My mom made the cute little glass markers so all the ladies could tell their glasses apart. My mom also made the mini wreath things to place over the bottle and I added the tags with a description of the wine and what it pairs well with.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yP5TjvB0sJw/Ud_xkWpIIVI/AAAAAAAAI3o/qm1gfkVRue8/s1600/winebridalshower_12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yP5TjvB0sJw/Ud_xkWpIIVI/AAAAAAAAI3o/qm1gfkVRue8/s640/winebridalshower_12.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We also had a non-alcoholic juice punch.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ry8s5lVhfU8/Ud_xepRXR2I/AAAAAAAAI3M/-S2LqTUsihs/s1600/winebridalshower_11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ry8s5lVhfU8/Ud_xepRXR2I/AAAAAAAAI3M/-S2LqTUsihs/s640/winebridalshower_11.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can maybe see the name tags my aunt made in this photo!</div>

It's been way too long.<br />
<br />
I wanted to share with you a product that I received to review. I've been thinking it would nice to own a portable backdrop stand for awhile now. I sometimes do photography in client's homes and I'm not always sure what I'll have for a background. Lo and behold out of the blue, <a href="http://www.thelashop.com/">TheLAShop</a> contacts me about sending me one to review! I haven't actually done any reviews like this before so I wasn't entirely sure how it would work out, but I received my stand just fine and I love it!<br />
<br />
I opened up the package right after it came. The kitty babes helped of course. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-um7G2hvlQl0/UcSxdI6JlgI/AAAAAAAAIyU/3USBlK7USBw/s1600/backdropstand.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-um7G2hvlQl0/UcSxdI6JlgI/AAAAAAAAIyU/3USBlK7USBw/s640/backdropstand.jpg" width="425" /></a></div>
I like the carrying case it's padded and has supportive buckles. One thing that would make it even better would be an adjustable long shoulder strap, so you could sling it across your back to have an extra hand to hold something else. I usually have a couple items to carry for photo shoots and a free hand would be nice. If you're wondering how much it weighs, it's about 13 pounds.<br />
<br />
I did not come with instructions, but was simple enough to put together as the bar parts are labeled with letters. It still would have been nice to have an affirmation that yes, I put it together correctly! You can either use 2 bars across for it to be 5 feet wide or 4 bars across the top to be 10 feet. This thing is compact, but is huge! One note, you'll have to get clamps separately. <br />
<br />
So far I've used it in a mini outdoor photo shoot that my sister helped me out with. I hung a vintage lace tablecloth from it! It worked great!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LpmY7V4Nb9Y/UcS27J69r6I/AAAAAAAAIyw/7yatqPkNmvs/s1600/backdropstand2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LpmY7V4Nb9Y/UcS27J69r6I/AAAAAAAAIyw/7yatqPkNmvs/s640/backdropstand2.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Overall, it seems well built, easy to use and is a great size for portrait work! Along with photography equipment, <a href="http://www.thelashop.com/"> TheLAshop</a> sells a little bit of everything including products for home, business, garden, beauty, hobbies and more.Yellow Suitcase Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07981474424654210849noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4365959976605441305.post-27084635689822538972013-03-23T15:10:00.002-05:002013-03-23T15:10:52.806-05:00Nightstand MakeoverWowzers long time no post!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fe3jYG1bMEI/UU4HbcJdRsI/AAAAAAAAIsk/M7pEeJu6xG8/s1600/nightstand_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></div>
I have a little furniture makeover to share with you today! Here's the side by side comparison of the before and after.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-b0c4CKW8d8o/UU4HeXi2sxI/AAAAAAAAItM/nwTO0rlYGXQ/s1600/nightstand_7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="484" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-b0c4CKW8d8o/UU4HeXi2sxI/AAAAAAAAItM/nwTO0rlYGXQ/s640/nightstand_7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I bought the nightstand for $10 at a thrift store. I primed it first then used a light cream paint that I found at our local Re-Store. I used a mini sponge roller to apply the paint.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VYh8_BCS8QM/UU4Hdxi9bFI/AAAAAAAAItE/PJmoPVgKOko/s1600/nightstand_6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VYh8_BCS8QM/UU4Hdxi9bFI/AAAAAAAAItE/PJmoPVgKOko/s640/nightstand_6.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
I happened to find a navy and white fabric box in the perfect size to use as a drawer at a thrift shop!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hInintjkYsQ/UU4HbMUtosI/AAAAAAAAIso/7xHPDckf0ns/s1600/nightstand_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hInintjkYsQ/UU4HbMUtosI/AAAAAAAAIso/7xHPDckf0ns/s640/nightstand_1.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l3m1PSBEwlM/UU4HatZumzI/AAAAAAAAIsc/SGcnU5L459M/s1600/nightstand_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
The updated <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/p/Liberty-Design-Facets-1-3-16-in-Victorian-Glass-Cabinet-Hardware-Knob-PN0238V-CL-C5/100060281?N=c296#.UU4KadVALh0">knobs are from Home Depot</a>. I adore the vintage look of them!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l3m1PSBEwlM/UU4HatZumzI/AAAAAAAAIsc/SGcnU5L459M/s1600/nightstand_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l3m1PSBEwlM/UU4HatZumzI/AAAAAAAAIsc/SGcnU5L459M/s640/nightstand_3.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mco_oJg1GZ0/UU4HbiIJj4I/AAAAAAAAIs0/UL0gvwE4L-M/s1600/nightstand_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mco_oJg1GZ0/UU4HbiIJj4I/AAAAAAAAIs0/UL0gvwE4L-M/s640/nightstand_4.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I cheated a bit for the top of the dresser. It has an inset space that had a piece of ugly board that was not original to the piece. I kept debating what to put as the top and used it with an open top for far too long, so instead I used <a href="http://yellowsuitcasestudio.blogspot.com/2012/01/suitcase-stories-great-grandmas.html">my great grandma's suitcase</a>. It's almost a perfect fit!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-o8rLzFxdopQ/UU4HcworqCI/AAAAAAAAIs8/Z55GmqwbIVc/s1600/nightstand_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-o8rLzFxdopQ/UU4HcworqCI/AAAAAAAAIs8/Z55GmqwbIVc/s640/nightstand_5.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The lamp is also from our local ReStore! </div>

Now if only we could find a nightstand for my husband's side of the bed. He's has old plastic drawers that he has been using since college.</div>

Our bedroom looks so much better than when we first moved in. There are still things to finish like trim and curtains! Never ending projects! I can't wait to share more with you!</div>

These are fairly simple projects and I used many materials that I already had on hand. One thing that is great about baby items is that you don't need a lot of fabric and tutorials and patterns are so abundant all over the internet!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-isbjth_DDLs/USLAqUR0bVI/AAAAAAAAIqY/8pl_1YZAu9U/s1600/babyshower_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-isbjth_DDLs/USLAqUR0bVI/AAAAAAAAIqY/8pl_1YZAu9U/s640/babyshower_1.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
For the onesie, I printed out a giraffe silhouette that I found online. You could do this for almost any shape! I used fusible webbing on the fabric so I could iron it on to the onesie. Then, I used a zig-zag stitch around the outside. I also used a small piece of black ribbon for the tail. Don't have any small pieces of thin ribbon? Go to your closet. I'm sure you have a couple dresses or sweaters that have the ribbon loops in the shoulders to keep them on the hanger! Yeah those things that you probably don't use once the item is home!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aHwglmwy-hc/USLArWh902I/AAAAAAAAIqg/Y53tiri4zeQ/s1600/babyshower_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aHwglmwy-hc/USLArWh902I/AAAAAAAAIqg/Y53tiri4zeQ/s640/babyshower_3.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
The pacifier clip is another easy gift to make. There's a great tutorial from <a href="http://www.rufflesandstuff.com/2010/05/pacifier-clip-tutorial.html">Ruffles And Stuff</a>. If you don't have a small piece of elastic for the loop end, you can use a hair elastic!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yEVFMOKU5HA/USLAr8MRYeI/AAAAAAAAIqs/Qo61bvmukY0/s1600/babyshower_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yEVFMOKU5HA/USLAr8MRYeI/AAAAAAAAIqs/Qo61bvmukY0/s640/babyshower_4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I just love this hat! Does the fabric look familiar? Remember the <a href="http://yellowsuitcasestudio.blogspot.com/2012/09/turtleneck-refashion.html">turtleneck I refashioned</a>? The turtleneck that I removed was the perfect amount of fabric for the hat! You could make a mom and baby outfit :) I got the <a href="http://www.zaaberry.blogspot.com/2012/08/baby-hats-tutorial-and-pattern.html">tutorial and pattern from Zaaberry</a>.<br />
<br />
I also made a rag quilt alphabet! I got the idea and printable letters from the blog, <a href="http://www.happytogethercreates.com/2009/07/rag-quilt-letters-tutorial.html">Happy Together</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VcUSOHa-nBg/USLAt0T54JI/AAAAAAAAIq4/F-_25_qapNM/s1600/babyshower_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VcUSOHa-nBg/USLAt0T54JI/AAAAAAAAIq4/F-_25_qapNM/s640/babyshower_5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I layered scrap fabric, batting, and old denim then quilted around the edges of the letters and the inside. It doesn't have to be perfect! I did it really quickly to get through all those letters! To finish them I used pinking shears around the edges then washed them.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EOrHsfZx7Zo/USLAuBk2s2I/AAAAAAAAIq8/btJCZ2mQYRg/s1600/babyshower_7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EOrHsfZx7Zo/USLAuBk2s2I/AAAAAAAAIq8/btJCZ2mQYRg/s640/babyshower_7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I packaged them with twine and mini clothespins so they can use them for decoration or play when baby is a little older.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2xJ5x4YUhIk/USLAuLdXjzI/AAAAAAAAIrE/kUEHmWnYlk8/s1600/babyshower_6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2xJ5x4YUhIk/USLAuLdXjzI/AAAAAAAAIrE/kUEHmWnYlk8/s640/babyshower_6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

Let's drool over these cake photos, ok?!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IBH0v00jliw/URrDQxw0PRI/AAAAAAAAIos/XX1IQ6iXemQ/s1600/_MG_1913.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IBH0v00jliw/URrDQxw0PRI/AAAAAAAAIos/XX1IQ6iXemQ/s640/_MG_1913.jpg" width="420" /></a></div>
Over the weekend we celebrated my husband's grandma's 88th birthday! (February is a great month for birthdays, by the way!) I made her a cake and I wasn't planning on sharing it on the blog since I decided what I was going to do somewhat last minute, I didn't know how it was going to turn out, and I didn't take in process photos. Well, I ended up making the.best.cake. I have ever made and it got fantastic reviews! How could I not share that! It must have been all that butter, chocolate, and love. <br />
<br />
I don't have in-process photos, but I'll share where I found my recipes and some techniques. It went so well that I thought it was too good to be true. The only thing was though, that I took far too many trips to the grocery store. It must be like how my dad says, "it always takes 3 trips to the hardware store" when working on a project.<br />
<br />
The cake was a marble cake made with 1 box of Duncan Hines French Vanilla cake mix and 1 box of Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Fudge cake mix. I used 9 inch cake pans. I cut out parchment paper circles and made sure the pans were nice and greased up so that the cake came out without fuss. There was about 2.5 cups total batter per pan. I made 4 cake layers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LyR7cMnYtQ0/URrDXvZNMaI/AAAAAAAAIpc/oPlDBt2rp7I/s1600/_MG_2029.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LyR7cMnYtQ0/URrDXvZNMaI/AAAAAAAAIpc/oPlDBt2rp7I/s640/_MG_2029.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
For the filling I made 2 batches of raspberry cream filling using a <a href="http://www.unegaminedanslacuisine.com/2011/12/chocolate-mocha-cake-with-raspberry.html">recipe from <span itemprop="name">Une Gamine dans la Cuisine.</span></a> I still have some leftover.<br />
<br />
I found the <a href="http://www.bakeaholic.ca/cupcakes/dark-chocolate-cupcakes/">dark chocolate frosting recipe on the blog, Bakeaholic</a>. This frosting was so fantastic to work with. It worked well spreading it on and piping it on. I also love that it's not too sweet. The dark chocolate is a nice contrast to the very sweet raspberry filling. Beware, chocolate frosting some how gets everywhere! I made 4 batches and this was way way way too much!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4V6u4KjADy0/URrDU-x-jdI/AAAAAAAAIo0/FCnU_HzhC84/s1600/_MG_1886.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4V6u4KjADy0/URrDU-x-jdI/AAAAAAAAIo0/FCnU_HzhC84/s640/_MG_1886.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
There is a great tutorial on <a href="http://www.whisk-kid.com/2011/02/how-to-assemble-layer-cake.html">assembling a layer cake from the blog, Whisk Kid</a> and then also one for <a href="http://www.whisk-kid.com/2011/02/how-to-frost-cake.html">doing a crumb coat and frosting your layer cake</a>.<br />
<br />
I got the inspiration for the piping from a <a href="http://ohhappyday.com/2011/10/an-anniversary-party/">cake seen in an anniversary party featured on the blog Oh Happy Day</a>. As far as piping frosting goes, this is very easy to do. It didn't take too long and looks impressive! I used a Wilton #21 star tip. Start at the bottom of the cake making continuous clockwise circles/swirls going straight up the side of the cake, overlapping each one ever so slightly. Use consistent pressure and size. Sorry if this is hard to understand I don't have photos or video of it. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bwjLLiDGTUA/URrDVLY5BfI/AAAAAAAAIpA/Uh6ztKuQrMg/s1600/_MG_1897.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bwjLLiDGTUA/URrDVLY5BfI/AAAAAAAAIpA/Uh6ztKuQrMg/s640/_MG_1897.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
My favorite part about making this cake was that Grandma was over the moon about it! It makes the time and energy put in to it so worth it :) It helps that everyone else loved it as well!<br />

This was so up my alley! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-73AKlctNPQ0/URBjC8HzYFI/AAAAAAAAIgI/sc34uydKXxQ/s1600/Macklemore-Challenge.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="386" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-73AKlctNPQ0/URBjC8HzYFI/AAAAAAAAIgI/sc34uydKXxQ/s640/Macklemore-Challenge.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
If you haven't heard the song, take a listen! I'm not really into rap but I love this song -- seriously how many songs can you name that are about rocking thrift store finds?! Beware it's catchy (and this is the clean version, but it's not thaaat clean).<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="350" mozallowfullscreen="" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/56256943" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="650"></iframe> <br />
<br />
The challenge is as follows:<br />
Step #1. Go to a thrift shop with – just as the chorus of the song says – “$20 in your pocket” and take a picture. <br />
Step #2. Spend that $20 any way you’d like and photograph your spoils. <br />
Step #3. Find one item (or more) referenced in the song and snap a pic.<br />
<br />
I went to my trusty Value Village ready to "pop some tags" with $20.<br />

<br />
A pillow form.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And this rusty, dusty mirror that needs some cleaning up!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Aaaand the grand total was $8.21!</div>

<br />
A little back story first! I met <a href="http://ritamariagallery.com/">Rita, an artist,</a> at a networking event in 2011. One of the biggest things I took away from the networking was don't try and meet as many people as you can. Instead, spend your time making a meaningful, personal connection with one or two people. I'm so glad I did! Rita and I found that we had quite a bit in common. We were new to the networking scene, we lived about .5 miles away from each other, our wedding anniversaries are a day apart, we usually don't drink beer (the event was at a brewery!), and we were both settling in to what we wanted to do professionally. Since then Rita has been a wonderful client of my graphic design and photography work. And now I own two absolutely gorgeous pieces of artwork that she made especially for me!<br />
<br />
She made one for my craft room.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WykKz7x9Tfc/UPSnFpq02fI/AAAAAAAAIdY/VQ73Na7O9Sc/s1600/painting1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WykKz7x9Tfc/UPSnFpq02fI/AAAAAAAAIdY/VQ73Na7O9Sc/s640/painting1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pouLRjr05UE/UPSnLXKQDYI/AAAAAAAAIeQ/x8wGGZay5kQ/s1600/painting2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pouLRjr05UE/UPSnLXKQDYI/AAAAAAAAIeQ/x8wGGZay5kQ/s640/painting2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I just adore it! You know, when I first saw the photos she shared with me I wasn't sure exactly how it would look, but it's so perfect for the space!<br />

</div>
I hope everyone's 2013 is of to a great start!<br />
<br />
I haven't entered an <a href="http://www.iheartfaces.com/">I Heart Faces</a> challenge in awhile, but I didn't want to miss out on the Best Face of 2012 challenge! I'm entering one of my favorites from a newborn session last November. Little 5lb 10oz, Ivy made her debut in front of my camera at 8 days new. Life is so precious and beautiful :)<br />

Merry Christmas, friends! Wishing you all the best! Don't hold back on the hugging and eating :)<br />

<br />
How awesome are these vintage ornaments!?! I really scored on these, coming in at $1 a box from our local <a href="http://www.habitat.org/restores">Habitat ReStore</a>. You really never know what you might find there! (At ours right now - 3 old toilets that we replaced from our house and donated. I'm so happy to see those gone and not taking up space in our garage)<br />
<br />
I'm just swooning over the packaging design!<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TjQiZCLSgcc/UNKFBnPSS3I/AAAAAAAAIYk/dRc6ZeFBq1g/s1600/tacoseasoning_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TjQiZCLSgcc/UNKFBnPSS3I/AAAAAAAAIYk/dRc6ZeFBq1g/s640/tacoseasoning_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We eat tacos almost weekly and used to always buy those packets of seasoning. This, friends, is so much better. It's just as easy and you know everything that is in it. It's tasty too, of course. And who doesn't love tacos!?! So this makes a perfect gift! Any other gift procrastinators out there? Christmas is a couple days away!<br />
<br />
Taco Seasoning Recipe (makes about 3/4 cup) <br />
<a href="http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Taco-Seasoning-I/?scale=50&ismetric=0">Original recipe from allrecipes.com</a><br />
<br />
Ingredients:<br />
<br />
1/4 cup and 1 tablespoon chili powder
<br />
1-1/4 teaspoons garlic powder
<br />
1-1/4 teaspoons onion powder
<br />
1-1/4 teaspoons crushed red pepper
flakes
<br />
1-1/4 teaspoons dried oregano
<br />
2-1/2 teaspoons paprika<br />
2 tablespoons and 1-1/2 teaspoons
ground cumin
<br />
1 tablespoon and 2 teaspoons sea salt
(I usually don't use quite this much salt)<br />
1 tablespoon and 2 teaspoons blackpepper
<br />
<br />
Directions:
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 8px 4px 0px;">
Mix everything together! Store in an airtight container. <br />
<br />
Use about 3-4 tablespoons (or really how ever much suits your tastes) plus 1/4 cup of water per pound of meat.<br />
<br />
And here's the tag I designed for you! All I ask, is that you only use it for personal uses! I printed it on an off white cardstock and used bakery twine to tie it to the jar.</div>

Haha part of why we haven't checked out everything up there is that we don't have a tall enough ladder. On taking a peek up there, an old mailbox caught my eye and it was within reach!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-h7dd_lDhvgI/UMJG1qk3k6I/AAAAAAAAIUU/8M9gPBS03GY/s1600/_MG_8951.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-h7dd_lDhvgI/UMJG1qk3k6I/AAAAAAAAIUU/8M9gPBS03GY/s640/_MG_8951.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They don't make them like this anymore! I was disappointed that there wasn't any long forgotten secret money stashes or other treasure in it. Wouldn't that be a story to tell!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At my job we do letters to Santa and we didn't have anything very official looking for those letters to get to Santa. So, I quick made over the mailbox with some spray paint! </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used Rustoleum primer and then Rustoleum painter's touch flat white. Of course, in true crazy Wisconsin weather fashion I was some how able to spray paint outside in high 50 degree weather in December.</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--WCjmNbEnDM/ULVegsX4cYI/AAAAAAAAIE0/Crm_SbRBAD8/s1600/wreath1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--WCjmNbEnDM/ULVegsX4cYI/AAAAAAAAIE0/Crm_SbRBAD8/s640/wreath1.jpg" width="424" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6VkJuMl3YAs/ULVehQACcBI/AAAAAAAAIE8/36i_uMPM-Kw/s1600/wreath2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
The holidays are officially upon us! We got our Christmas tree over the weekend and we had some trimmings that I didn't want to go to waste. Thankfully I there was an old metal wreath form in our garage and some wire. I whipped up this wreath in no time! If you don't have a wreath form on hand try using a couple metal clothes hangers (if you happen to have those).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xQo9iEPPBrw/ULVekMCM8LI/AAAAAAAAIFM/im3cTI4pV98/s1600/wreath4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xQo9iEPPBrw/ULVekMCM8LI/AAAAAAAAIFM/im3cTI4pV98/s640/wreath4.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Grab some gloves and a small clippers to trim pieces further if necessary. I found it easiest to have a glove only on my left hand to hold the greenery to the frame and my right hand was free to wrap the wire around the frame. Wrap the wire around the base of the branch to attach it to the frame. You can use the a long piece of wire continuously adding pieces to make it full and covering where you wrapped the previous branch.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0uyoISnZwcY/ULVei4blxZI/AAAAAAAAIFE/hLVDKaKjbcM/s1600/wreath3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0uyoISnZwcY/ULVei4blxZI/AAAAAAAAIFE/hLVDKaKjbcM/s640/wreath3.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Once the wreath is nice and full you can hang it up on your door for everyone to admire your handiwork! I used some ribbon I had in my stash. There are so many options for this! I think it would be awesome with a thick strip of fabric, plaid flannel, or burlap. Use what you have on hand! My trick for hanging it on the door is to use an upside down command hook on the inside of the door and tie the ribbon to it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Do you use any of the leftover tree trimmings for decor? I'd love to hear how you use them!Yellow Suitcase Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07981474424654210849noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4365959976605441305.post-35433530844937837452012-11-13T08:05:00.000-06:002012-11-13T08:10:23.397-06:00Felted Wool Sweater Blanket FAQsThe <a href="http://yellowsuitcasestudio.blogspot.com/2011/10/wool-sweater-blanket-tutorial.html">felted wool sweater blanket</a> has been my most commented on, pinned, and shared post. I love it! I'm guessing there will be many being made for gifts this year. Thank you and way to spread the warmth :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-edurLthVDqI/UKJQDhlvuSI/AAAAAAAAH5U/8FUU7Lx8U8U/s1600/finishedblanket-faqs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-edurLthVDqI/UKJQDhlvuSI/AAAAAAAAH5U/8FUU7Lx8U8U/s640/finishedblanket-faqs.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
I also get a lot of questions about it so here are the most asked questions and answers:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<ol>
<li><b>Can I do this with non wool sweaters? </b><b></b></li>
<b></b>Absolutely! Never let the materials hinder your creativity. Be careful that they don't unravel too much while cutting and assembling. These sweaters may also stretch more than the felted wool. I think a regular binding might be nice around the edge with non wool sweaters, since the edges might be a little more unkept than the felted wool. If you cannot find wool sweaters how about trying to find wool suits and skirts? It will not be the same thickness, but it's still wool!<br /><br /><br />
<li><b>Where can I find wool sweaters? </b>Go to a thrift store in Wisconsin! Ok, if you can't do that check out your local thrift stores - some sweaters will already be pre-shrunk for you! Ask family and friends and check out rummage sales. Again if you cannot find wool sweaters what about trying wool suits or skirts? Go for it and try other materials!<br /></li>
<li><b> What percent wool should it be for felting? </b><br />The majority of the sweater should be wool or other animal fiber. While 100% is easiest, as low as 60 or 70 percent can work. Also note that every sweater will felt differently. <br /></li>
<li><b> How do you do that closed blanket stitch around the outside? <br /> </b><a href="http://www.embroidery.rocksea.org/stitch/blanket-stitch/closed-blanket-stitch/">This is the best illustration and tutorial I can find</a>. If you are familar with a regular blanket stitch - it's doing the same thing but stitching in the same spot twice and angling the needle.<br /></li>
<li><b>What size needle did you use for the outside stitching? </b>I used a metal yarn needle that was 2.5inches long. If you have trouble pulling the needle through, try using some finger grips like what you'd use for flipping through papers.<br /></li>
<li><b>Did you use batting?</b>Nope. It's so thick already!<br /></li>
<li><b>Did you do any quilting stitches to hold the layers together? </b>I did not. I think it would be a good idea though to do some since both layers are so heavy and tend to separate. <br /></li>
<li><b>Did you cut the seams of the sweaters open before felting or not? </b>Really you can do it either way! Most of them I did cut open and there were a couple that I got lazy with and washed as is. Cutting them beforehand lets you easily get the most out of the sweater. The seams will be hard to find after it is felted.<br /></li>
<li><b>How do you wash your finished blanket? </b><br />I have not washed my blanket so I can only suggest what I think would work the best. Spot clean clean when you can. Wash cold delicate and dry low delicate. Another option would be to dry the blanket flat outside maybe on a nice summer day! Did you know that wool has <a href="http://www.woolrevolution.com/virtues.html">antimicrobal properties and more</a>?<br /></li>
<li><b>Isn't it itchy? </b><br />No don't find it that itchy. Also, since I use it when it's cold, I'm wearing layers already and it's not up against my skin. If you're concerned about itchiness use a flannel or fleece for the back. You could also use all cashmere or merino wool. These are generally much softer.<br /></li>
<li><b>How long did it take you to make? </b>It will vary on your experience and how you like to work. I liked working on it in chunks. One day I did the washing. I cut the squares in an afternoon. In one day I pieced the front. For the outside stitching it took me a couple long car rides and some movies/tv shows.<br /></li>
<li><b>How do you keep everything from unraveling? </b><br />Cut the sweaters than follow the instructions for felting. This shrinks up all the fibers and holds them together.<br /></li>
<li><b>How many squares of each size did you use? </b><br />There are 28 5.5 in squares and 35 of the 10.5 in squares. I cut out way more than enough of the smaller ones so I could play around with the layout and color placement. I didn't use a specific pattern for placement of the squares. You can do more or less of the smaller/larger squares to your liking and what you get from your sweaters.</li>
</ol>
I hope this helps all you other crafters out there. Did I miss any questions? I'd love to see your finished blankets!<br />
<br />
I also have an update about my blanket. I'm sad to say it needs some repair that I keep putting off. Cats like wool and little did I know that one of ours would like to munch on it. We can now not leave the blanket out. So be aware if you own cats or will be giving one as a gift to a cat owner.<br />

<br />
There are so many little projects that we are in the process of or just not quite finished with yet. Who else has a bunch of unfinished projects around the house?<br />
<br />
One major update has been completed though! Our house has new windows! Oh and they are so nice! <br />
<br />
Here's what our house looks like with the new windows:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2jmlZmZ3B6s/UJPqA5EpSEI/AAAAAAAAG-E/9BQeE1PkJUA/s1600/window_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2jmlZmZ3B6s/UJPqA5EpSEI/AAAAAAAAG-E/9BQeE1PkJUA/s640/window_4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
But you have to see what we started with...oh yes, so much green.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9vFVYQbxleE/UJPp8jCfKXI/AAAAAAAAG9s/wJhycmU6L_Y/s1600/window_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9vFVYQbxleE/UJPp8jCfKXI/AAAAAAAAG9s/wJhycmU6L_Y/s640/window_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Back of the house before:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-grLEMso09_c/UJPp_tPBfaI/AAAAAAAAG98/8Cwn2_T875w/s1600/window_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-grLEMso09_c/UJPp_tPBfaI/AAAAAAAAG98/8Cwn2_T875w/s640/window_3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
And after!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Rb0NbVGlt3M/UJPqDA_0LQI/AAAAAAAAG-U/uDpKEHD34k0/s1600/window_6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Rb0NbVGlt3M/UJPqDA_0LQI/AAAAAAAAG-U/uDpKEHD34k0/s640/window_6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Side of house before:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PKRI91DKNOA/UJPp91M22sI/AAAAAAAAG90/1lDDQkQvi7c/s1600/window_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PKRI91DKNOA/UJPp91M22sI/AAAAAAAAG90/1lDDQkQvi7c/s640/window_2.jpg" width="425" /></a></div>
And after!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NQ6fZqXXeTI/UJPqB4s-TII/AAAAAAAAG-M/mla7UAAYVcU/s1600/window_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NQ6fZqXXeTI/UJPqB4s-TII/AAAAAAAAG-M/mla7UAAYVcU/s640/window_5.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
This is the before in our kitchen - cringe!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4G8PYK3QYKA/UJPqEIQI1II/AAAAAAAAG-c/0kjxT5LsY9M/s1600/window_7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4G8PYK3QYKA/UJPqEIQI1II/AAAAAAAAG-c/0kjxT5LsY9M/s640/window_7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
And for what I think is one of the most dramatic afters! Yes, the trim is still a little sad looking.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rLEtl57ZhEg/UJPqFsfn1sI/AAAAAAAAG-k/a12HY6QLos0/s1600/window_8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="436" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rLEtl57ZhEg/UJPqFsfn1sI/AAAAAAAAG-k/a12HY6QLos0/s640/window_8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
And this is the after in our living room. I guess there's no before for this one! The kitty babes love the picture window. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LrCgW3q4L4k/UJPqGluZVLI/AAAAAAAAG-s/HihwFXUVuYE/s1600/window_9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LrCgW3q4L4k/UJPqGluZVLI/AAAAAAAAG-s/HihwFXUVuYE/s640/window_9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Ah it feels so nice to have more efficient and easy to use windows!<br />
<br />
P.S. The colors of siding and roof look varied due to the very different times of day they were taken at. Also, the windows are from Window World if you're curious!Yellow Suitcase Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07981474424654210849noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4365959976605441305.post-49480024344111727292012-10-05T10:03:00.000-05:002012-10-05T10:03:20.454-05:00Eat!I'm sharing a bit of our new house with you today! The kitchen is pretty much staying the way it is...for now. There are other rooms that need much more attention than this! Until then I'm embracing our kitchen the way it is (quirks and all)!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DaGpY9SMjlk/UG7sSyqEaXI/AAAAAAAAGtk/JeW8JpMskjc/s1600/kitchen2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DaGpY9SMjlk/UG7sSyqEaXI/AAAAAAAAGtk/JeW8JpMskjc/s640/kitchen2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Did I mention our kitchen has a lot of yellow? Haha and who am I fooling with those clear counters?!?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6tPKLNY2avk/UG7sWKLQvzI/AAAAAAAAGt8/L2PsVbgrX8A/s1600/kitchen5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6tPKLNY2avk/UG7sWKLQvzI/AAAAAAAAGt8/L2PsVbgrX8A/s640/kitchen5.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We don't have a dishwasher and quite frankly sometimes we fail and somehow loose the ability to do dishes. Really why is it so hard to do 5 minutes daily compared to the hour of not doing them for days... Anyone else with me?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the themes we've found about the previous owners is that they didn't want things to go anywhere. Case and point - cutting boards attached to the counters. There was one on each side of the sink. One came up easy and after trying to pry the other one up we found it was screwed on. For realz!?!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7dQOeFzk34U/UG7sYpCs0GI/AAAAAAAAGuM/5IrlviAVUH0/s1600/kitchen7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7dQOeFzk34U/UG7sYpCs0GI/AAAAAAAAGuM/5IrlviAVUH0/s640/kitchen7.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That meant holes through the counter! 6 of them. Hubby filled them with some clear silicone sealant. Glad those cutting boards are gone!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bSfG-85wwek/UG7sVN9g9XI/AAAAAAAAGt0/AOyuGFEuiHY/s1600/kitchen4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bSfG-85wwek/UG7sVN9g9XI/AAAAAAAAGt0/AOyuGFEuiHY/s640/kitchen4.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Our kitchen is carpeted. Can you think of any instances when carpet in a kitchen is a good idea? Note to self avoid spilling anything on the floor.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yes, there are things not to love in our kitchen, but I do love the shelves that the previous owner left!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pWpMWdCHdZc/UG7sUUpTNkI/AAAAAAAAGts/O5iIyncFLzc/s1600/kitchen3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pWpMWdCHdZc/UG7sUUpTNkI/AAAAAAAAGts/O5iIyncFLzc/s640/kitchen3.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There was a third slightly longer shelf below which we took down because it was too low. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What do you think of the eat sign?!? I love it! My husband cut it out for me. If anyone is wondering, it's the <a href="http://www.dafont.com/fr/lobster.font">font, Lobster 1.3</a> super large!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SomIRc38D6o/UG7sXZky21I/AAAAAAAAGuE/gwuEfnH7etM/s1600/kitchen6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SomIRc38D6o/UG7sXZky21I/AAAAAAAAGuE/gwuEfnH7etM/s640/kitchen6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I can't decide if I want to paint it. I was planning to do it in teal or white, but I'm kinda liking the natural wood. What do you think?</div>
Yellow Suitcase Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07981474424654210849noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4365959976605441305.post-88551506222881181542012-09-28T14:56:00.001-05:002012-12-07T06:22:19.609-06:00Turtleneck RefashionHere's a quick makeover for you! I've been on the lookout for a striped shirt and well, I wasn't really finding what I wanted. So instead of looking for the shirt I wanted, I looked for a shirt that I could make into what I wanted. I bought a turtleneck (cringe!) at a thrift store that was a good weight fabric and I liked the stripes!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6SG9OGjuPac/UGX8uFON42I/AAAAAAAAGYI/JwnwkBBRgJU/s1600/shirt_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="472" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6SG9OGjuPac/UGX8uFON42I/AAAAAAAAGYI/JwnwkBBRgJU/s640/shirt_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I started by taking in the sleeves and the sides. I used another shirt to use as a template. Pin the excess and then sew! Try it on and make any adjustments then trim away the excess.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7-gBkSJCKjE/UGX8wWCwEEI/AAAAAAAAGYY/xgs2up8Jq6U/s1600/shirt_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7-gBkSJCKjE/UGX8wWCwEEI/AAAAAAAAGYY/xgs2up8Jq6U/s640/shirt_3.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Then cut the neckline and again you can use another shirt as a template. So long turtleneck!! The front neckline is slightly lower than the back. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-57fW7hxnR_4/UGX8xWvz3yI/AAAAAAAAGYg/TXkBZlFQezs/s1600/shirt_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-57fW7hxnR_4/UGX8xWvz3yI/AAAAAAAAGYg/TXkBZlFQezs/s640/shirt_4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used bias tape to finish the neckline following <a href="http://www.coletterie.com/tutorials-tips-tricks/facing-or-detail-bias-binding">a tutorial from Coletterie</a>. I absolutely love the pop of color on the inside and the structure that it gave to the neckline. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mbCmp14uH8c/UGX8yjjbxPI/AAAAAAAAGYo/FOH0wjeTk9E/s1600/shirt_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mbCmp14uH8c/UGX8yjjbxPI/AAAAAAAAGYo/FOH0wjeTk9E/s640/shirt_5.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
That's it! A quick and easy afternoon project! I'm looking forward to layering this top with some cute fall and winter outfits.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NODGKv_zQZI/UGX8vfgEEbI/AAAAAAAAGYQ/Z_IXUwv7k3s/s1600/shirt_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NODGKv_zQZI/UGX8vfgEEbI/AAAAAAAAGYQ/Z_IXUwv7k3s/s640/shirt_2.jpg" width="420" /></a></div>

I can't wait to share more pictures with you and the updates we'll be doing. And boy will there be updates! What I'd call it now is maybe 60's kitsch - wallpaper galore, a faux brick wall, yellow kitchen countertops, and a cringe-worthy bathroom!<br />

Get any fun things?<br />
<br />
I went to one this past weekend with my mom and sister. I got a couple fun things that I wanted to share with you!<br />
<br />
First up is this super cute unused birthday book to keep track of birthdays and anniversaries. I've been wanting to get something like this for quite awhile now and I love that I found a vintage one. Once you get married and everyone starts having babies it's hard to keep track of all those birthdays. I feel a little bad actually writing in it because it's so pretty (maybe that's why it no one has ever written anything in it). The copyright date is 1942.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w3VSzE2IviY/UA8U-PnfyKI/AAAAAAAAGGc/TuT4MQ-iPAw/s1600/_MG_1143.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w3VSzE2IviY/UA8U-PnfyKI/AAAAAAAAGGc/TuT4MQ-iPAw/s640/_MG_1143.jpg" width="422" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">{ha how appropriate are the forget-me-nots!}</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">There is a page for each day of the year with a quote and a Bible passage.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wkmUEcXTplY/UA8U_qpFLRI/AAAAAAAAGGk/sA9Wq77CijA/s1600/_MG_1147.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wkmUEcXTplY/UA8U_qpFLRI/AAAAAAAAGGk/sA9Wq77CijA/s640/_MG_1147.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><br />
The other thing I got were these letterpress blocks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Et6sfSZIyEQ/UA8XEq1owQI/AAAAAAAAGGs/N6mIlx3M7ao/s1600/_MG_1155.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Et6sfSZIyEQ/UA8XEq1owQI/AAAAAAAAGGs/N6mIlx3M7ao/s640/_MG_1155.jpg" width="416" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">{I used to play clarinet so that one has a special place in my heart}</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Unlike my other antique mall posts (<a href="http://yellowsuitcasestudio.blogspot.com/2012/01/inspiration-at-antique-mall.html">here</a> and <a href="http://yellowsuitcasestudio.blogspot.com/2012/02/more-antique-mall-inspiration.html">here</a>) I happened to have my real camera along!<br />
<br />
I was most drawn to the quilts.<br />

<br />
I got this chair from a rummage sale for $3. My husband and I walked to the rummage sale and I had to carry the chair home. It was my husband's one condition for me getting it (haha this makes him sound not very <span style="padding-bottom: 14px; padding-right: 15px;">chivalrous). It was for my own good and it wasn't that far. </span><br />

This post may look like a kitty photo shoot. It's not. Jake has claimed this chair as his own. His big body must fit in the molded seat perfectly. This chair also sits in our kitchen by the stove where he likes to sit and watch us making food.<br />
<br />
