mailbox makeover

We have some unexplored area above the garage in our house. Haha part of why we haven't checked out everything up there is that we don't have a tall enough ladder. On taking a peek up there, an old mailbox caught my eye and it was within reach!

They don't make them like this anymore! I was disappointed that there wasn't any long forgotten secret money stashes or other treasure in it. Wouldn't that be a story to tell!

At my job we do letters to Santa and we didn't have anything very official looking for those letters to get to Santa. So, I quick made over the mailbox with some spray paint!

I used Rustoleum primer and then Rustoleum painter's touch flat white. Of course, in true crazy Wisconsin weather fashion I was some how able to spray paint outside in high 50 degree weather in December.

I think I'd still like to paint the flag red how it was, but for now it's happily helping make sure that letters get delivered to Santa!

Sanding, Spray Paint, and Love

This is another edition of sanding, spray paint, and love!

I got this chair from a rummage sale for $3. My husband and I walked to the rummage sale and I had to carry the chair home. It was my husband's one condition for me getting it (haha this makes him sound not very chivalrous).  It was for my own good and it wasn't that far.

This post may look like a kitty photo shoot. It's not. Jake has claimed this chair as his own. His big body must fit in the molded seat perfectly. This chair also sits in our kitchen by the stove where he likes to sit and watch us making food.

After some rough sanding and wiping it down, I did a coat of primer. I used Rust-Oleum’s Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover 2x Primer.

After that, I used Rust-Oleum’s Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover 2x Aqua Satin. I love this bright cheery color!

I also used this chair in a 1 year photo shoot for a sweet and wiggly little girl. It was perfect!

I'm still trying to decide if I want to add some distressing to it. What do you think?

Frame Makeover - DIY Dry Erase Board

Last December I got a frame at a white elephant gift exchange in desperate need of a makeover.

Much better! I saw the idea on a couple other blogs to write on glass or plexiglass like a dry erase board. That's what I plan on using it for (ha need to get some markers) and also for just decoration in my craft room.

Here's my process:

The first thing I did was to clean it up. I took out the nails that were holding the image in. I glued on a couple pieces that had cracked and were really loose. I also used steel wool on the back to clean up stuff that was flaking off.

The next step was to prime and spray paint! I used Rust-Oleum's painters touch 2x cover primer and satin summer squash. This is the same color I used on my peg board and chair makeover.

My husband got and cut plexiglass to fit the frame for me.

For the inside of the frame, I wanted to use a piece of a vintage flowered bed sheet that I love. So I cut out a piece of cardboard to fit in the frame. I used spray adhesive to attach the fabric to the cardboard and make it nice and smooth. Then, wrapped the edges around the back and stapled it to the cardboard.

 

On to the fun part - putting it all together! 

I used 2 glazier points on each side to hold everything in the frame.

Sanding, Spray Paint, and Love

 They do wonders!

I got this beautiful chair from my in-laws basement. I had been looking around for a chair that I could use in the craft room. This one is perfect. I love the curves and the details on the front legs and spindles!

Next it got a good sanding and clean up. Then a coat of primer. In retrospect I think I should have used more primer.

Guess what color I painted it? If you guessed yellow you are the winner! I used the same summer squash yellow as in my painted peg board.

Peg Board Update for the Craft Room

I was really inspired by some finds on Pinterest for this project. It is definitely budget friendly and makes a huge difference. Peg board is not just for garage and basement workshops anymore.

My parents let me have at a piece of pegboard that had been sitting in their basement ever since I can remember.

I cleaned it up and got ready with the spray paint! I painted it outside and used empty soda cans to hold it off the ground. I didn't use any primer, but it might have been a good idea this pegboard absorbed quite a bit of paint. I basically used up the whole can.

After it was all dry it was time to hang it in the craft room! Hubby helped with this part quite a bit. Well actually he did most of it. I told him where I wanted it and helped hold it. He's the best. We used a skinny board on the top and bottom to keep it about 3/4" off the wall so the hooks can be added easily.

I got a box of 50 assorted hooks for just under $5 at Menards. It has all the variety I need and there's still plenty left for when I find more fun stuff to hang up.
